The TC Index measures category fit, not product quality. A higher number means a garment sits closer to the TechnoCasual ideal. It does not mean the garment is better made, better value or more appropriate for a specialist use.
The formula
T = Technical Function · C = Casual / Everyday Wearability · I = Design Integration.
The geometric mean forces balance: very high technical capability cannot fully compensate for low everyday wearability, and vice versa. Integration acts as a smaller modifier of up to 10% so discreet, coherent functionality is rewarded without dominating the score.
Three components
Technical Function
Meaningful performance beyond a conventional equivalent.
- Weather protection
- Mobility / stretch
- Breathability / moisture management
- Travel and care performance
- Useful construction and storage
Everyday Wearability
How naturally the piece works in ordinary life.
- Familiar silhouette
- Styling breadth
- Work / travel / social range
- Visual restraint
- All-day comfort
Design Integration
How successfully the technical features disappear into the garment.
- Discreet functionality
- Coherent construction
- Features solve real problems
- Minimal technical theatre
- Form still reads as clothing, not equipment
TC Index bands
High function and high everyday wearability, with technical features integrated cleanly.
Clearly belongs in the category, with one dimension somewhat stronger than the other.
Touches the category but leans noticeably toward conventional clothing, sport/outdoor or techwear.
Some relevant characteristics, but not enough balance to define the category.
Little overlap with the TechnoCasual definition. This is not a negative quality judgement.
Product cards across TechnoCasual now display their current TC Index classification. These are specification-based category-fit scores unless a page explicitly says otherwise.
Why not just average the scores?
An ordinary cotton chino might be exceptionally wearable but barely technical. An extreme techwear shell might be exceptionally technical but visually difficult in an ordinary office or restaurant. A simple arithmetic average would allow one extreme to compensate too easily for the other. The geometric mean penalises imbalance and therefore reflects the central TechnoCasual idea: function and wearability must coexist.
Conventional chinos
Excellent everyday wearability cannot by itself create a high TC Index.
Extreme techwear
Outstanding function is pulled down when technicality becomes the dominant visual language.
Balanced TC garment
Strong performance, easy daily wear and quiet integration produce a Core score.
The 2026 reference set
These scores are editorial classifications based on published specifications, product construction and intended use. They are not hands-on review scores. Scores should be read as approximate positions within a framework rather than laboratory measurements.
| Reference | T | C | I | TC Index | Band | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional wool blazer Reference anchor | 20 | 94 | 95 | TC 43 | Low TC | High social versatility; little technical performance in the usual form. |
| Standard cotton chinos Reference anchor | 25 | 95 | 95 | TC 48 | Low TC | Very easy to wear; normally limited weather, movement or care performance. |
| COS technical utility shirt Adjacent / entry | 55 | 86 | 72 | TC 67 | TC Adjacent | A familiar shirt shape with a more technical nylon-cotton construction. |
| SPOKE Travel Denim Core-adjacent | 58 | 92 | 90 | TC 72 | Strong TechnoCasual | Looks like ordinary denim but adds stretch and concealed secure storage. |
| UNIQLO BLOCKTECH parka Core | 70 | 82 | 82 | TC 74 | Strong TechnoCasual | A mainstream city silhouette with meaningful weather protection. |
| Seagale Performance Chinos Core | 74 | 88 | 94 | TC 80 | Strong TechnoCasual | Dress-chino appearance paired with stretch, breathability and water/stain resistance. |
| Rains Pocket Jacket Core | 78 | 80 | 86 | TC 78 | Strong TechnoCasual | Minimal city silhouette with waterproof fabric, welded seams and practical storage. |
| Arc'teryx Veilance Corbel Pant Core / premium | 90 | 85 | 96 | TC 87 | Core TechnoCasual | A city-refined softshell trouser with advanced fabric performance and quiet integration. |
| Mission Workshop ATLAS Travel Chino Technical edge | 88 | 68 | 72 | TC 75 | Strong TechnoCasual | High stretch, water repellency and packability, with a visibly more technical character. |
| ACRONYM P47A-DS Techwear boundary | 98 | 50 | 40 | TC 66 | TC Adjacent | Extremely capable and engineered, but the technical system is intentionally part of the visual identity. |
| Mountain hardshell Reference anchor | 94 | 40 | 35 | TC 57 | TC Adjacent | Excellent specialist performance with a strong outdoor visual/context signal. |
| Athleisure jogger Reference anchor | 45 | 65 | 70 | TC 52 | Low TC | Comfort and movement are high, but technical weather/care performance and social range are limited. |
The map remains useful because two garments can have similar TC Index scores for different reasons. The component scores show whether a piece leans toward technical performance or everyday wearability.
Score a product link
The TC Index Estimator applies this methodology automatically to public Vinted, retailer and brand product pages. Automated results are clearly marked as estimates and include a confidence level.
Evidence rules
Technical claims should be supported by manufacturer or retailer specifications: materials, membranes, stretch, water resistance, care, pocket construction and intended use.
Wearability and integration inevitably involve judgement. The component scores remain visible so readers can disagree with the conclusion rather than treating one number as objective truth.
A TC Index can be assigned from verifiable design/specification evidence. It is not a durability, comfort or value review unless TechnoCasual separately says the product was tested hands-on.
Material product changes or a better methodology can change future scores. Major methodology changes receive a new version number and annual reference sets remain dated.
TC Index versus a future TC Score
The Index answers “how TechnoCasual is it?” It deliberately does not answer “how good is it?” Quality, fit, comfort over time, durability and value require real use. If TechnoCasual later introduces a hands-on review score, it will be clearly separated from the TC Index.
